Apparently these screws sometimes worked loose and fell out, so Remington later fixed the problem by adding the side retaining screws. I have been told that this is sometimes seen on very early 12C rifles. The forend wood retaining screws do not have locking side screws. The barrel is a tad shorter than most at 23 3/4". The bore is clean and bright with sharp distinct rifling. The bluing is about 80% overall, the action is crisp and positive and it's accurate as hell. Manufactured from 1909 to 1936 in styles listed.
